Veterans with Substance Use and Mental Health Services

Transitioning from military to civilian life brings unique challenges, and for many veterans, substance use and mental health concerns can make that transition even more difficult. Whether you’re dealing with combat-related trauma, chronic pain, PTSD, or simply trying to find your place after service, you don’t have to face these challenges alone.

Anuvia is here to serve those who have served. From initial assessments to comprehensive treatment programs, our veteran-focused services recognize the unique experiences and needs of military service members. Below we discuss common challenges veterans face, explain the programs Anuvia offers, and include resources specifically designed for veterans in crisis.

Understanding Veteran-Specific Challenges

Veterans face distinct challenges that can contribute to substance use and mental health struggles:

  • Combat trauma and PTSD: Exposure to combat, witnessing injury or death, and experiencing life-threatening situations can lead to persistent trauma symptoms
  • Chronic pain and injury: Physical injuries sustained during service often lead to prescription pain medication use and potential dependence
  • Transition stress: Adjusting to civilian life, finding employment, and reintegrating with family can be overwhelming
  • Military sexual trauma (MST): Sexual assault or harassment during service can have lasting psychological effects
  • Loss of identity and purpose: Moving from the structured military environment to civilian life can create feelings of disconnection
  • Stigma around seeking help: Military culture may discourage seeking mental health or substance use treatment

Recognizing the Signs

Be aware of these warning signs in yourself or a veteran you know:

  • Increased alcohol or drug use to cope with stress or memories
  • Withdrawing from family, friends, or activities
  • Difficulty sleeping or persistent nightmares
  • Hypervigilance or being constantly “on guard”
  • Anger or irritability that’s difficult to control
  • Feeling detached or numb emotionally
  • Avoiding places, people, or situations that trigger memories
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Feelings of guilt, shame, or hopelessness
  • Continued substance use despite negative consequences

If you’ve noticed any of these signs, reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Our counselors are available, just give Anuvia a call at (704) 376-7447.

Why Veteran-Aware Treatment Matters

Research shows that veterans experience substance use disorders at higher rates than the general population. Studies indicate:

  • Approximately 11% of veterans seeking VA services for the first time meet criteria for a substance use disorder
  • About 20% of veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan have PTSD or depression
  • Co-occurring disorders (substance use plus mental health conditions) affect 37-50% of veterans from recent conflicts
  • The combination of trauma, physical pain, and difficult transitions makes veterans particularly vulnerable

At Anuvia, we recognize that effective treatment must address the whole person, including military experiences, service-related trauma, and the unique pressures veterans face.
