First, there are a few simple things you can do at home help keep your kids away from the harms of alcohol and other drugs. For instance:
- Talk to your children on the facts and dangers of drugs and how to make healthy decisions. Your words and actions matter.
- Get to know your child’s friends and their families. Create a list of their friends’ phone numbers.
- Give your child a clear message: Say no to drugs. Establish rules and consequences appropriate for your family.
In addition, you may also want to get involved in your school's PTA, or join a local coalition t focuses on preventing underage drug and alcohol use.
It is also important to recognize the signs that your child may have a problem with drugs or alcohol.
